You’re Entitled to Specialized Credit Reports
It’s been out there for awhile now. The Federal government passed a law (the Fair Credit Reporting Act or FCRA) allowing you to pull your credit report annually. The Northeastern United States can do so on September 1. However, did you know this isn’t the only type of report you’re eligible to pull? Your information is stored in many locations, and these specialized credit reports are just as susceptible to identity theft as your standard credit report.
A Google search of “specialized credit reports” pulls up 2.6 million entries, but don’t worry, there’s not quite that many agencies you need to be concerned with. Liz Pulliam Weston writes about these specialized credit reports in her MSN Money column.
Not only are these firms required to provide you with your report, unlike the annual credit report, there is no staggered roll-out. You’re eligible to receive your report now. So what are you waiting for? Here is a list of where you can get your specialized reports, pulled from Ms. Weston’s article for your convenience:
- Medical Information: Check out the Medical Information Bureau
- Tenant History: There are other companies besides these too, but the article provided links to Registry Safe-Rent and U.D. Registry.
- Auto and homeowners insurance claims: Check out ChoicePoint’s CLUE reports. The other main player must be ordered offline by calling (800) 709-8842 or by writing:
A-PLUS Consumer Inquiry Center
545 Washington Blvd. 22nd Floor
Jersey City, NY 07310-1686. - Check-writing history: ChexSystems is where you should go.
So there you have it. The research has been done, and now it’s up to you.
