Good Things on the IRS Website

Have you ever taken a good look around the IRS website? There are a lot of neat little nuggets of goodness to be found for people like us.

Where’s My Refund?

This is my favorite this time of year. All you need is your social security number, filing status and anticipated refund amount to check on your refund. You’ll be able to find out if the IRS is processing your refund and an approximate date for your refund to be mailed or deposited. When your refund is done processing, your approximate date will become much more specific.

Alternative Minimum Tax Assistant

Ah, the dreaded AMT. This little tool will help those who fill out their tax forms without the assistance of a software program to tell them if they are subject to the AMT. Bring the draft of your 1040 along to fill this out.

Free File Alliance

As Elana and I have mentioned in previous articles, taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of less than $50,000 may be eligible for free electronic filing. More details can be found on the IRS website.

Find an Authorized E-File Provider

Input your zip code and find e-file providers in your area.

Forms and Publications

As e-filing becomes more popular, it’s becoming more difficult to find paper forms. Sometimes you just need a form. For example, did you know there’s a form to change your address with the IRS? One excellent use for this is if you filed your tax return and have moved since.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

This is a great place to look if you have a question. There’s a good chance it’s not only been asked before, it’s probably been asked a lot.

Tax Fraud Alerts

Is someone telling you that taxes are voluntary or illegal? How about that you are entitled to tax credits or refunds for slavery reparations? Are you a little suspicious of an employer who is offering to pay you in cash? If something looks suspicious, there’s a good chance your instincts are correct. Don’t get yourself in trouble; please research it.

Tax Information for Individuals

This page has a bunch of links for the average taxpayer, some of which I’ve listed above, others not.

This is by no means a complete list. Please comment with other cool findings on the website.  I’d love to hear about them!
