Last Minute Gifts

I wanted to take a little timeout to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season.  I probably won’t be posting another real article until after the new year, but I did want to sneak this in, again off schedule, but hey, it’s my blog, right?  I can post off schedule if I want to!

A little reminder to all of our readers, don’t spend money that you don’t have.  It’s a very simple concept that is hard to follow this time of year, but it’s important.  I know that it’s crunch time and you need to find something to check those friends or relatives off your gift list, but don’t just rush off and buy the first thing that looks adequate disregarding the cost.  If you can’t pay for it in the next month when your credit card bills come in, you probably shouldn’t be buying it.

If you just can’t find the perfect gift for someone within your price range, consider the following:

- Checking out Amazon or Buy.com to see if the person has a Wish List.

- Writing a check, giving cash or buying a well researched and fee-free gift card.

- Making a gift.  (Do you sew, knit, bake or have some other talent you can put to good use?)

- Donating to a charity in their name.

- Wait until after Christmas, especially if you won’t see the person until after Christmas.  Think clearance, sales and bargains!

- Buy a present later.  My spouse and I do this all the time and it seems to work out well.  Some years, there’s simply nothing that we really want so we’ll skip gifts.  Other years, they come later after much more thought is put into it.

Despite all of the commercialism that the holidays seem to bring about, this season really is about spending time with friends and family, not presents.  Please make sure you don’t lose sight of that.

Happy holidays, everyone!
