Outing Myself As a Troublemaking Consumer

(SPECIAL FUN:  See how many geeky things you notice in the story below.)

Tonight was my husband’s turn to make dinner so when I heard, “Hey, let’s order pizza!” I wasn’t surprised.  It’s ok, though, because it’s Friday night.  I feel it’s almost a reward for making it through yet another week at work.   (Have I really “made it”, though, if I’m still working through the night and into the weekend?  Hm.  Point to ponder… )

The hubby then went onto the PizzaHut.com website and ordered a pizza for delivery.  He used our Chase Visa rewards credit card.  It’s ok, though, because we pay the balance off at the end of the month, thus paying no interest.  The bonus is the 1% cash back we’ll get from the credit card rewards.

When the pizza arrives, I hand the credit card to the delivery guy.  “Oh no, I don’t need that anymore,” he says.

“Really?”  I prod.  This was of special interest to me because their previous practice was to take your credit card and rub the numbers off onto your receipt to get an imprint.  This really annoyed me because while the receipt was generally safe by having all but four credit card numbers starred out or masked due to Visa and Mastercard security rules, rubbing off the number onto a copy of the receipt kind of defeats the purpose in my mind.   I was told by one of the delivery people that it was a mechanism to ensure the deliverer actually looked at the credit card.

“Oh yes,” he replies.   “Some lady complained that by doing that, it wasn’t safe…”

Uh oh.  I was starting to feel flushed.

“Yeah,” he continues.  “Something about an invasion of her privacy.”

Yeah, um, I’m feeling more uneasy just listening to him.

“She’s even suing us!” the delivery dude finishes.

Suddenly, I feel relief.  Why?  Because I emailed in on the website complaining about this exact thing.  I never used the “invasion of privacy” line, but still, until he got to the lawsuit part, I really thought he was talking about me and even knew it was me!  Talk about a sudden case of paranoia.

Whew!  While I’d like to bring about security improvements to my fine pizza delivery establishments, feeling like I was found out by the delivery dude was oddly not a good feeling.
