Stimulus Payment Redirection

We were one of the unfortunate families who ended up receiving our IRS economic stimulus payment (aka bribery money) via check instead of direct deposit, despite my best efforts of e-filing and allowing the IRS to deduct what we owed on our taxes from our bank account.  (See if I e-file the next time we owe money, damned IRS!!!)

My original intention was to save the money because the economy stinks and I’d rather have the money for a rainy day.  Well, it seems that I have changed my mind.  I’d much rather have new appliances to replace my circa 1971 appliances than an extra $1500 in savings.

Sears is doing a promotion where you can take your stimulus check in there and get 10% on top of the check’s value in gift cards.  Since this is where we buy most appliances, it seemed to make sense.  Plus, Sears frequently does 10-15% off sales for their appliances so we could come out of this with a pretty good deal.

Oh, c’mon.  I know our avocado green cooktop and painted black oven are very retro looking, but I want a cooktop where I don’t need a lighter to start it and an oven that can hold a turkey without me worrying about it being too close to the sides.  Apparently turkeys, just like people, were much smaller in 1971, didn’t ya know?

Anyway, the appliances seemed like a good idea since we’re hoping to sell our house in a couple of years and while retro appliances are interesting to look at, they aren’t exactly on most home buyers list of things they desire in a new home.

So, there.  Consider us doing our part to stimulate our sucky economy.
